Dr. Marilyn Cox, founder of the electrophysiology program at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, retired in June 2023 after 27 years of dedicated service in the Tallahassee area and beyond. Dr. Cox was recruited by Southern Medical Group and TMH to develop the region’s first electrophysiology department, which has grown over the last three decades into a comprehensive, state-of-the-art program serving thousands of patients in northwest Florida and southern Georgia. In recognition of her numerous accomplishments and contributions to healthcare, the Dr. Marilyn Cox Cardiology Fund has been established at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Foundation to celebrate her retirement and support ongoing expansion and excellence in Cardiovascular care.
One of Dr. Maniscalco's most important early roles was Chairman of the Florida Chapter's Third-Party Reimbursement Committee. He possessed exceptional knowledge of the business of cardiovascular practice, fee schedules, nomenclature and coding requirements, insurance provider contracts and the Medicare system. An appreciation of these topics contributed to a new vision for all the Chapters of the American College of Cardiology. He and Richard Berger, MD, FACC began meetings with the Florida Medicare Administration. He recalled the first Florida Chapter meeting in 1987: “bringing clinicians together to solve local and state problems, address legislative and payor issues, obtain valuable education, and meet colleagues.” This led to his appointment to the American College of Cardiology’s Coding and Nomenclature Committee in 1989, and in 1998 to its centrally important Common Procedural Terminology Committee, which was responsible for creating codes for cardiovascular billing purposes. In 1992, he was elected Governor-Elect of the Florida Chapter and served as Governor and member of the ACC Board of Directors from 1993 – 1996, a foundational element of the Chapter's work to this day.
Dr. Maniscalo's family is celebrating his life and legacy by dedicating the Hippocrates statue at St. Joseph’s Hospital in his honor while launching a new ForHearts Worldwide program, supported by the Benjamin S. Maniscalco Legacy Fund, to help Tampa Bay patients overcome financial barriers to the care they need.
