Florida Chapter Social in Atlanta Practice Cost Surveys In the past few years, we have seen surveys reevaluating the resources that we put into cardiac procedures, specifically electrophysiology and percutaneous coronary intervention. Those surveys are used to determine the RVUs and reimbursement for those procedures. While presently the EP and interventional services are no longer open, there is an open survey going on for practice costs at large. If you have received one of these and have not completed it yet, please do so. If you need any assistance, please let us know and we will put you in touch with the right staff who can help you to answer the questions accurately. If you have a moment to search your junk folder, the email should have come from Mathematica.
New Cardiovascular Board The ACC along with our partners in HRS, SCAI, HFSA, and the AHA, have received some initial positive feedback on their application to establish a new cardiovascular board with the ABIM. The next step in the process will be an open comment opportunity from members of the public, including yourselves, which we anticipate will open in the very near future. Please be on the lookout for this information and we will be sure to share it with you as well.
Socials with the Board of Directors Your Board of Directors is organizing social events in each of the districts around Florida. Please be on the lookout for invitations to join us. We are hosting these events because we want to hear more about what is going on in your practice, what is affecting you day-to-day, and understand how the chapter can best support you as you take care for patients. We appreciate those of you who have taken the time to join us already.
Sincerely,
David Winchester, MD, MS, FACC President, Florida Chapter ACC President's MessageEarly AprilDear FCACC Members: FIT Section The Florida ACC FIT Winter Meeting in Miami featured a FIT forum designed by FITs. The focus of the agenda was to foster career and leadership development through a dynamic curriculum. Participants benefited from fantastic speakers covering topics such as financial planning, contract negotiation, the business of cardiology, and engaging with ACC at the local and national levels. The oral case competition series showcased intriguing cases from around the state. The thrilling 2nd annual fellows Jeopardy competition, moderated by Dr. Mario Lopez, featured six teams from various institutions partaking in the friendly trivia battle. Congratulations to all participants as well as our case competition winner Bria Rice from Mayo Jacksonville and the University of Florida Jeopardy team (Josh Latner, Mohammad Elzeneini, and Osama Dasa) who will represent the state chapter at the national ACC Jeopardy competition in April. We look forward to building on this great winter meeting! WIC Section This year‘s winter FCACC WIC session was a great success. We had excellent attendance and participation from many of our WIC as well as FIT members. We gathered for an informative, half-day session including wide ranging topics focusing on issues that affect new fellowship graduates entering the cardiology workforce to addressing mid-career cardiologists needs and beyond. We had sessions covering contract negotiation and renegotiation, managing personal finance, as well as understanding the business of cardiology. We also heard a number of excellent case presentations from our FIT members and enjoyed multiple networking and mentoring opportunities for women in cardiology at all stages. We are looking forward to continuing our conversations at the WIC Wellness Session at our upcoming August meeting! In Memoriam, Dr. Gerold Schiebler Lastly, I would like to close with a memorial to an amazing pediatric cardiologist who provided unparalleled leadership in advocacy for his patients and colleagues, Dr. Gerold Schiebler.
Dr. Schiebler served as chair of the UF Department of Pediatrics for 27 years and was considered by many to be the father of the department. His impact was magnified by the pediatricians and pediatric specialists he helped train, many of whom he kept in regular touch. Born in 1928 and raised in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, Dr. Schiebler graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1954 and joined the UF College of Medicine in 1960, becoming the first pediatric cardiologist in North Florida. In 1968, he was named chair of the Department of Pediatrics and became the associate vice president for health affairs for external relations in 1985.
Dr. Schiebler helped found the division of Children’s Medical Services within the state’s department of health and rehabilitative services, serving in a variety of roles, including as statewide director, since 1971. He can be credited with more than 50 pro-child state laws, including those related to insurance coverage for babies at birth, poison control centers, infant hearing loss and more. He worked tirelessly to advocate for children, often in partnership with his late wife, Audrey Lincourt Schiebler. David Winchester, MD, MS, FACC President, Florida Chapter ACC |
